Oral Language Supporting Early Literacy (OLSEL)

The OLSEL initiative supports teachers to effectively plan and implement programs to meet the oral language needs of students in the early years of schooling. The OLSEL research project 2009–2010 identified a link between poorly developed oral language skills and literacy difficulties and found that focussed classroom teaching achieved statistically and educationally significant gains in the students’ oral language and literacy. Project details are available on the OLSEL website.

Enhancing Early Reading Intervention Knowledge (ERIK)

The ERIK research project was conducted in conjunction with the University of Melbourne and culminated in the development of an assessment profile and three instructional pathways for use with early years' students experiencing literacy difficulties. The instructional pathways in phonological awareness, orthographic processing and comprehension are applied to text reading. Schools considering implementation of ERIK are able to access professional learning and support to establish and evaluate the program.

Postgraduate Certificate in Early Literacy Intervention

Postgraduate study options including the Postgraduate Certificate in Early Literacy Intervention and Oral Language Learning - the primary years, are offered to support the development of teacher professional knowledge in the areas of early literacy difficulties. The associated website provides access to hundreds of action research projects undertaken in Catholic primary schools.
